RESUMO

Aspergillosis is an uncommon disease in horses, but it can be fatal. We report two cases of systemic aspergillosis in foals that occurred in a short period in the same region of southern Brazil. In addition, a literature review of similar cases was also performed. Risk factors were attributed to an immunodepression by primary enterocolitis and corticosteroid treatment, the damage in the epithelium, and multiple antibacterial treatments, which allowed local fungal proliferation, tissue invasion and spread of infection, leading to death. Since the antemortem diagnosis of aspergillosis in foals is difficult, our report alerts equine veterinarians regarding the importance of suspecting and investigating fungal co-infections in complicated cases of enterocolitis.

Both pregnancy and obesity can influence significant changes in the immune system. On this basis, the present study proposes to evaluate the humoral immune response of overweight pregnant mares in response to a commercial vaccine. Thirty pregnant Crioulo mares were separated according to body condition score (BCS) into overweight (BCS≥7/9) or lean-control (BCS= 5-6/9). In each group, the animals were subdivided into vaccinated and controls. The mares were vaccinated against EHV-1 in two doses spaced 21 days apart and had their blood collected monthly, for five months, for antibody evaluation. Both vaccinated groups had an increase in specific neutralizing antibodies after the vaccine. However, after the second dose, there was no increase in antibodies in any of the groups. Vaccinated overweight and lean-control mares did not differ at any time point. Therefore, this study demonstrated that obesity does not influence the humoral immune response in pregnant Crioulo mares.(AU)


Tanto a gestação quanto a obesidade podem influenciar o desenvolvimento de alterações significativas no sistema imune, portanto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a resposta imune humoral de éguas gestantes com sobrepeso em resposta a uma vacina comercial. Trinta éguas Crioulas gestantes foram separadas de acordo com o escore de condição corporal (ECC) em éguas com sobrepeso (ECC≥7/9) e éguas controles (ECC=5-6/9) e, ainda, em cada grupo, os animais também foram separados em vacinados e controles. As éguas foram vacinadas contra o EHV-1 em duas doses com intervalo de 21 dias, sendo realizadas coletas de sangue mensalmente durante cinco meses para avaliação de anticorpos neutralizantes. Ambos os grupos vacinados tiveram aumento de anticorpos neutralizantes específicos após a vacina, porém, após a segunda dose, não foi observado aumento de anticorpos em nenhum dos grupos. Nenhuma diferença foi observada entre éguas vacinadas com sobrepeso e as éguas controles em nenhum momento. Assim, este estudo demonstrou que a obesidade não é um fator que influencia a resposta imune humoral de éguas Crioulas gestantes.(AU)

Equine theileriosis, caused by the Theileria equi protozoan, is a disease of worldwide importance. T. equi expresses surface proteins, of which the EMA-2 protein is a promising antigen for vaccine use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immune response of adult horses, pregnant mares, and foals to an experimental EMA-2 protein of recombinant T. equi vaccine. A total of 46 horses were used in this study for vaccine trials and challenges. Twelve geldings, 14 pregnant mares, and 14 foals were divided into vaccinated and control groups. Total serum specific anti-rEMA-2 IgG, IgG subclasses, and transcription of cytokines related to the immune response were evaluated. For the vaccine challenge, six six-month-old foals were divided into vaccinated and control groups. For the challenge, blood from a horse with theileriosis was transfused to the foals. Geldings and pregnant mares maintained anti-rEMA-2 IgG levels at 130 and 140 days after vaccination, respectively. The most-detected IgG subclasses in vaccinated were IgG3/5, IgG4/7, and IgG1. IL2, IL10, IL12, IL17, IFN-γ, and TNF-α were the most-transcribed cytokines in PBMCs of vaccinated horses stimulated with rEMA-2. Challenge with T. equi demonstrated that vaccinated foals had an increase of 33% in total IgG four days after blood transfusion, while control foals had no significant response, suggesting that vaccine antibodies may have recognized EMA-2 protein of the native T. equi antigen. T. equi recombinant EMA-2 was shown to be a promising vaccine antigen by inducing humoral and cellular immunity similar to that observed in natural parasite infections.

The occurrence of gastrointestinal myiasis caused by Gasterophilus spp. larvae (Diptera: Oestridae) in adult horses has been widely characterized, however data on natural infestation in young foals have been lacking. This observation may be related to the absence of conclusive diagnosis in these individuals, most likely due to logistical or financial constraints. Gastric ulceration is a problem and a significant cause of morbidity in foals, particularly during the weaning stage; therefore, gasterophilosis should be included in the differential diagnosis. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of gasterophilosis in 4- to 6-month-old weanling foals. Seventy-one healthy weanling foals were enrolled in the study. Physical assessment blood sampling and was completed in all foals before the commencement of the experiment. Gastroscopy examinations were performed under sedation (Detomidine 0.01 - 0.02 mg/kg) with a flexible endoscope inserted through nasogastric via. The lumen of the stomach was examined in order to search for botflies' larvae. Following gastroscopy, foals were classified into 2 groups based on the presence of Gasterophilus spp. larvae in their stomachs: 1) Infected and 2) Not Infected. Infected foals received a single dose of commercial trichlorfon and albendazole equine oral gel and were stalled for 24 h. The passed feces were thoroughly examined, searching for elimination of larvae. A total of 64% of the foals (n = 45/71) harbored Gasterophilus spp. larvae in the stomach. Mild hyperemia in the gastric mucosa was observed in the attachment sites of the parasites. Physical assessment and hematological parameters' data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk normality test. Comparison between groups for clinical signs, hematological parameters and Gasterophilus spp. infection rates were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test or Student's t-test. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. There were no statistically significant variations in physical and hematological parameters between foals that were affected and those that were not infected. The larvae found in the feces were subjected to morphological examination, which confirmed the diagnosis of Gasterophilus intestinalis. No systemic clinical indications compatible with Gasterophilus spp. infestation were seen, as described in previous studies of horses infected with the parasite. No botfly eggs were observed in the hair of evaluated foals. During gastroscopy, mild hyperemic lesions in the gastric mucosa were observed in the larvae fixation sites. Although no changes in clinical or hematological parameters were noted, the confirmation of parasite presence is a cause for concern due to horses' tolerance for low infestation levels and poor diagnosis. Additionally, the presence of this myiasis in foals may be a significant stressor during the weaning period and should be included in the differential diagnosis of recurring abdominal pain. Furthermore, infected foals might be a reservoir for the parasite and, contribute to the elimination and spread of the larvae in the environment. Thus, inclusion of young horses in deworming protocols targeted to botfly larvae is needed. This is the first report of Gasterophilus intestinalis myiasis in foals in Brazil. Further research is necessary to fully understand the epidemiology and prevalence of this condition in young horses in Brazil, based on the findings of this study.(AU)

Abstract The Equine Strangles, caused by Streptococcus equi subs. equi, is a contagious disease, causing high rates of morbidity been responsible for important economic losses. The M protein synthesized by S. equi plays an important role in the pathogenesis and is a promising candidate for a vaccine antigen. The innate immune system is responsible for the first immune response against microorganisms, this response is mediated by receptors that detect PAMPs and their activation trigger crucial modulation of the adaptative immune response. This work describes the immune response of S. equi subs. equi. recombinant SeM protein, using Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) as an expression and delivery vaccine system. To characterize and to determine the vaccine efficacy, mice were vaccinated as followed: 1. Recombinant E. coli expressing rSeM protein; 2. The same recombinant E. coli, inactivated adsorbed in Alumen; 3. Purified rSeM protein adsorbed in Alumen; 4. Inactivated S. equi whole cells adsorbed in Alumen; 5. Control group. All vaccinated mice developed protective response against S. equi infection, however the groups that received the E. coli expressing rSeM presented significant higher IgG level than other vaccinated groups. The recombinant E. coli delivery vaccine system also induced a highest IgG response than inactivated S. equi or purified rSeM vaccines in horses. This study evidence that the recombinant E. coli, live or inactivated, enhanced the humoral response, reaching significant higher antibodies levels than those obtained in the vaccination with the bacterin or purified antigen, showing the feasibility of producing low-cost vaccines against strangles.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of neonatal death during the first-week postfoaling. Despite recent advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis in the newborn foal, the non-specific clinical signs and subtle nature of this disease may result in delayed diagnosis until severe progression of the disease; thus, early detection of sepsis remains critical for a favourable outcome. This study aimed to identify early blood markers as predictive of sepsis on foals. METHODS: Thirty-five foals were allocated into three groups: healthy control foals (n=7) and foals born from mares with placentitis: septic foals (n=9) and non-septic foals (n=19). Blood samples were obtained immediately after foaling and at 12, 24 and 48 hours. All samples were assessed for glucose, lactate, triglycerides, total cholesterol, urea, creatinine, total solids, fibrinogen, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), serum amyloid A (SAA) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations. RESULTS: At foaling, glucose and GGT concentrations were lower in septic foals (P<0.001). Of interest, SAA, AFP, creatinine and total cholesterol were higher in septic foals at parturition (P<0.05). At 12 hours, lactate, triglycerides and total cholesterol concentrations were higher in septic foals. When evaluated at 24 and 48 hours, higher concentrations of SAA and AFP were found in placentitis foals than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Total cholesterol and lactate appear to be suitable markers for sepsis during the first 24 hours postpartum. Septic foals displayed altered energy metabolisms as determined by increased triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations, hypoglycaemia at birth and reduced activity of the GGT and increased lactate and urea concentrations. Sepsis was associated with high concentrations of SAA and AFP.

Placental tissues from humans, rodents, and farm animal contain leptin and its receptor. Expression of leptin has already been described in horses, although there is no description about immunolocalization of leptin and its receptor. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence and distribution of leptin and ObR-b in the equine placenta at term by immunofluorescence staining, and the changes on plasma leptin concentrations during late gestation. The present study involved eight Criollo-type mares carrying healthy pregnancies. Blood samples were collected during the third trimester of gestation, at foaling, and at 24 hours after foaling. Leptin concentrations were analyzed via radioimmunoassay. Plasma leptin concentrations did not change from the 8th to the 10th month of gestation and displayed a discrete decrease 24 hours after parturition (P = .07). The expression of leptin and ObR-b was observed in the cytoplasm of pseudostratified epithelial cells in the areolar region and in the epithelium of microcotyledons. Also, leptin receptor was allocated in the apical surface of the cells. The presence of leptin and its receptor (ObR-b) in the placenta of mares at term supports an endocrine and autocrine/paracrine action of leptin within this organ.

High rates of paracoccidioidomycosis disease and infection have been recently reported in southern Brazil. However, the knowledgment about the ecoepidemiology of Paracoccidioides spp. in the region is limited, therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the presence of Paracoccidioides spp. DNA in soil samples from a rural area in Southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Thirty pools of soil samples from Bagé, RS (31º19'53"S 54º06'25"W) were submitted to physicochemical analysis, and to fungal DNA extraction by Norgen Biotek® Kit (Thorold, Canada), followed by Nested PCR technique with ITS4 and ITS5 as external primers, and PBITS-E and PBITS-T as internal primers. DNA amplification products of about 424 bp compatible with Paracoccidioides spp. were detected in eight (26.7%) of the 30 pools of samples, being three were sequenced and identified as P. brasiliensis. Positive soils were characterized by high levels of humidity, organic matter, basic saturation, and pH. This study shows for the first time the presence of Paracoccidioides spp. DNA at soils from the Brazilian Pampa Biome, proving that people living in those areas are exposed to the main agent of paracoccidioidomycosis.

ABSTRACT: The aims of this study were: 1) to compare the tape weight and associated weight-estimation formula to evaluate weight gain in pregnant mares, and 2) to develop a mathematical model to estimate the weight of pregnant mares using body measurements. Thirty-four criollo-type mares were evaluated every two weeks during the middle and late pregnancy. The mares were weighed on a livestock scale, and we estimated body weight using tape weights and an associated body-weight estimation formula. Also, heart-girth circumference (heartgirth) and abdominal circumference were measured; the latter at the 12th intercostal space (12th ICS) and 18th rib (18th Rib), to use in a mathematical model to estimate the weight of pregnant mares. Observations were divided into three periods of pregnancy: 5th to 7 h month, 7th to 9 h month, and 9th to 11th month. Mares in late pregnancy showed an increase in actual weight and an increase in 12th ICS and 18th Rib measurements. Tape weight and body-weight estimation formula underestimated the weight of pregnant mares. However, the regression model using heart-girth circumference, 12th ICS, and 18th Rib measurements showed high correlation (r2 = 0.87, P<0.001) with actual weight. Finally, the alternative methods usually used in horses are not accurate to estimate body weight in pregnant mares. In conclusion, the regression model Y=-540.143 + (heartgirth x 3.068) + (12th ICS x 1.278) + (18th Rib x 0.944) can be used to estimate body weight in pregnant mares from the 5th to 11th months of pregnancy.


RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivos: 1) comparar a utilização dos métodos alternativos fita de pesagem e peso metabólico em éguas gestantes e; 2) desenvolver um modelo matemático para estimar o peso de éguas gestantes, baseado em medidas corporais. Trinta e quatro éguas foram avaliadas quinzenalmente durante o terço médio e final da gestação. Foi realizada a pesagem em balança comercial; a mensuração com a fita de peso para equinos; o cálculo do peso metabólico; as medidas de perímetro torácico (Ptorac); a mensuração abdominal no décimo segundo espaço intercostal (12EI) e na décima oitava costela (18Cost). As observações foram divididas em três períodos gestacionais: Período de 5 a 7 meses, Período de 7 a 9 meses e Período de 9 a 11 meses. As éguas demonstraram incremento no peso na balança e na mensuração abdominal no 12EI e 18Cost no terço final da gestação. A utilização da fita de pesagem e o cálculo de peso metabólico subestimaram o peso na balança em éguas gestantes. O modelo de regressão utilizando o Ptorac, 12EI e 18Cost apresentou alta correção (r2=0,87; P<0,001) com o peso na balança. Observou-se que os métodos alternativos de pesagem, usualmente utilizados, não apresentaram a mesma eficiência em éguas prenhes. Pode-se concluir que o modelo de regressão Y=-540,143+(Ptorac X 3,068) + (12EI X 1,278) + (18Cost X 0,944) pode ser utilizado para mensurar o peso em éguas gestantes a partir do 5º mês de gestação.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Allopurinol in foals born from mares with placentitis. Twenty foals were assigned into two groups: Healthy foals (n=10), born from healthy mares and Placentitis foals (n=10), born from mares with placentitis. Five foals from each group were randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. Treatment groups received Allopurinol (40mg kg-1 orally six hours after birth). Blood samples were collected for estimation of hematological variables and serum concentration of calcium, chloride, creatinine, phosphorus, glucose, lactate and magnesium. Placentitis foals presented leukopenia and neutropenia when compared with Healthy foals, at birth. The white blood cell (WBC) count was lower in the Placentitis foals untreated at 12 hours. No adverse effects related to the use of Allopurinol were detected. Treated Placentitis foals showed higher serum calcium and glucose levels within 12 hours than untreated Placentitis foals. Administration of Allopurinol PO in foals born from mares with placentitis did not result in adverse effects and can help in stabilizing serum calcium and glucose levels.


RESUMO: Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos da administração por via oral de Alopurinol em potros nascidos de éguas com placentite. Vinte potros foram divididos em dois grupos: potros saudáveis (n=10), nascidos de éguas sem placentite, e potros placentite (n=10), nascidos de éguas com placentite. Cinco potros de cada grupo foram selecionados aleatoriamente para compor o grupo tratado ou controle. Os grupos tratados receberam Alopurinol (40mg kg-1 PO na sexta hora de vida). Foram coletadas amostras sanguíneas para realização de análise hematológica e avaliação das concentrações séricas de cálcio, cloretos, creatinina, fósforo, glicose, lactato e magnésio. Os potros placentite apresentaram leucopenia e neutropenia, comparado com os potros saudáveis no momento do nascimento. O grupo placentite não tratado apresentou leucopenia no momento 12 horas. Não foram observados efeitos adversos relacionados ao uso do Alopurinol. O grupo placentite tratado apresentou maiores concentrações de cálcio e glicose em relação ao grupo placentite não tratado, nas 12 horas. A administração de Alopurinol por via oral em dose única em potros nascidos de éguas com placentite não resultou em efeitos adversos e pode ter contribuído para a estabilização dos níveis de cálcio e glicose.

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the etiological agent of the major systemic mycosis in Brazil, called paracoccidioidomycosis. Although the Rio Grande do Sul is considered an endemic area of the disease, there are few studies on the ecology of P. brasiliensis in the state. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the infection of P. brasiliensis in horses from the mesoregion of Southwest Riograndense, using these animals as sentinels. Serological techniques, such as double immunodiffusion in agar gel (AGID) and indirect ELISA, were performed to detect the anti-gp43 P. brasiliensis antibody in horses from five different farms in the region of Bagé, RS, Brazil. Serology was performed in 200 Pure Blood English horses up to two years of age that were born and raised exclusively at the farms. Of these horses, 12% had anti-gp43 antibodies according to the ELISA results, with rates ranging from 0 to 30% according to the farm of origin (p < 0.001). Based on the immunodiffusion results, all equine serum samples were negative. These results indicate the presence of the fungus P. brasiliensis in the middle region of the southwestern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures are limited by the inability to mature equine oocytes on in vitro methods. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate structural integrity of equine oocytes subjected to vitrification with a synthetic polymer (PVA). METHODS: The effect of eGH and its relationship with IGF-I on in vitro maturation (IVM) were evaluated. Compact cumulus oocytes complexes (n=122) were cultured in TCM-199 with eGH, IGF-I or eGH+IGF-I for 30h at 38.5C in air with 5 % CO2. Oocytes were fixed after IVM or subjected to the vitrification protocol. Cryopreserved oocytes were exposed to 1.4M DMSO+1.8M EG+1 percent PVA for 3min, and then transfer to 2.8M DMSO+3.6M EG+0.6M sucrose+1 % PVA for 1min. After rewarming, oocytes were evaluated by confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Maturation rates of oocytes were not significant different among groups (P > 0.05), however eGH+IGF-I group can develop the assessment of resumption of meiosis (MI+MII = 86.7 %). CONCLUSION: The oocyte did not show morphological alterations. The use of PVA-copolymer may represent a potential alternative for vitrification of equine oocytes after IVM.

Pythium insidiosum is an important pathogen of mammals' species, including humans. Equine is the main species affected by this oomycete. P. insidiosum requires an aquatic environment to develop its life cycle, and the susceptible hosts are contaminated when they contact the microorganism in swampy areas. The equine pythiosis is characterized by the formation of irregular masses within the cutaneous lesions, called kunkers, which easily detach from the lesion. From these structures, it is possible to isolate P. insidiosum in pure cultures. The present study aimed to reproduce in vitro the life cycle of P. insidiosum from kunkers of equine clinical lesions. Fifteen kunkers from different horses were tested. It was observed that the discharge of zoospores occurred after 24-48 h of incubation at 37 °C in, respectively, 40 and 47 % of the kunkers evaluated. Only two samples showed no development of the asexual cycle of P. insidiosum under the conditions tested. It was possible to demonstrate that kunkers are able to restart the asexual cycle of P. insidiosum. Based on our in vitro results, we highlight the importance of these structures in the epidemiology of the pythiosis, since kunkers can be a potential source of contamination of this oomycete for aquatic environments.

The Crioulo breed of horses performs in one of the most physically demanding equestrian competitions, the Marcha de Resistência, which is a contest in which the horses run 750 km in 15 days. The study's aim was to characterize the metabolic responses during this period. We evaluated eleven Crioulo horses in the competition, specifically, two males and nine females. Blood samples were collected 24 hours before the contest and on the 4th, 9th, 11th, 14th and 15th days of competition. We evaluated CK, AST, LDH, glucose, lactate, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, total calcium, ionized calcium, total protein, hematocrit and the white blood cell count. At the end of the competition, the mean values of serum AST were 1151±358 IU/ L the mean LDH values were 7418±1695 IU/L and CK was 13,867±3998UI /L. There was a significant increase in urea, creatinine and lactate (p<0.0001). A decrease in the mean values of chloride, sodium, potassium, and total and ionized calcium was observed (p≤0.0002). An evaluation of the total leukocytes and segmented neutrophils (p≤0.0002) revealed their increased values, and decreased values were observed for hematocrit, plasma protein and total lymphocytes (p≤0.0003). The values of glucose, on average, remained constant. Based on these data, we conclude that the Marcha de Resistência competition necessitated a high muscular demand and the depletion of energy and electrolytes, suggesting an inflammatory process in the animals evaluated.


O cavalo Crioulo realiza uma das provas de maior exigência física nas modalidades equestres. A Marcha de Resistência é uma competição na qual os animais percorrem 750km durante 15 dias. O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar as respostas metabólicas ocorridas nesse período. Foram avaliados 11 equinos da raça Crioula inscritos na competição, sendo dois machos e nove fêmeas. Foram efetuadas coletas de sangue 24h antes da prova e no 4º, 9º, 11º, 14º e 15º dia de competição. Foram avaliados a concentração sanguínea de creatininoquinase, aspartato aminotransferase, lactato desidrogenase, glicose, lactato, uréia, creatinina, sódio, potássio, cloreto, magnésio, cálcio total, cálcio iônico, proteínas totais, hematócrito e o leucograma. Ao final da competição os valores médios de AST sérica foram de 1151±358 UI/L, os valores de médios de LDH foram de 7418±1695 UI/L e de CK foi de 13867±3998UI/L. Houve aumento significativo nos valores de uréia, creatinina e lactato (p<0,0001). Foi observada diminuição nos valores médios de cloreto, sódio, potássio, cálcio total e iônico (p≤0,0002). Na avaliação hematológica foi constatada elevação nos valores de leucócitos totais e segmentados (p≤0,0002) e diminuição nos valores de hematócrito, proteína plasmática total e linfócitos (p≤0,0003). Os valores de glicose, em média mantiveram-se constantes. Com base nesses dados conclui-se que a competição Marcha de Resistência determinou elevada exigência muscular, com depleção energética e eletrolítica, além de sugerir um processo inflamatório nos animais avaliados.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da somatotropina recombinante bovina (rbST) sobre os marcadores do metabolismoenergético, proteico, mineral e hepático de touros mantidos em semiconfinamento. Foram utilizados 20 touros de raçasAberdeen Angus e Brangus, sendo divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos (Placebo e rbST), para que no Placebo fosseadministrado via subcutânea duas doses de NaCl, 0,9% e no rbST fosse administrado o rbST (Lactotropin®). Foram realizadascinco coletas de sangue, com intervalo de 14 dias, para avaliação da concentração de triacilgliceróis e colesterol comomarcadores energéticos, ureia, como indicador proteico, fosfatase alcalina e fósforo como marcadores minerais e asenzimas aspartato aminotransferase (AST) e a gama glutamiltransferase (GGT) como indicadoras da função hepática. Aaplicação de rbST não influenciou os marcadores energéticos, minerais, e proteico, exceto a enzima hepática GGT (P 0,05).Estes resultados indicam que a utilização do rbST em touros não alterou o metabolismo, pois os parâmetros avaliadosmantiveram-se dentro dos padrões considerados fisiológicos para a espécie.


The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on metabolic markers for energy, protein, mineral and hepatic metabolism of sires kept grazing and receiving concentrate. Twenty sires Aberdeen Angus and Brangus used for this experiment were divided in two groups (Placebo and rbST). The group Placebo received subcutaneous administration of NaCl, 0.9% and rbST receive rbST twice. Five blood collections with 14 days of interval were made for evaluation of triglyceride and cholesterol as energetic metabolism markers, urea, as proteic marker, alkaline phosphatase and phosphorus as minerals markers and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) as indicators of the hepatic function. The rbST did not influence the energetic, mineral and proteic markers, except the hepatic enzyme GGT (P<0,05). These results indicated that the use of rbST in sires did not affect metabolism, therefore evaluated parameters remaining in the physiological range for the specie.

A adenite equina, também conhecida como garrotilho, é uma enfermidade bacteriana contagiosa, causada por Streptococcus equi, subsp. equi, bactéria β hemolítica do grupo C de Lancefield, que afeta o trato respiratório anterior de equinos de todas as idades, com maior prevalência entre um e cinco anos de idade. Caracteriza-se por produzir secreção mucopurulenta das vias aéreas anteriores e linfadenite dos gânglios retrofaríngeos e submandibulares com formação de abscessos. Fatores de virulência de S. equi, subsp. equi, incluem cápsula de ácido hialurônico, hialuronidase, estreptolisina O, estreptoquinase, receptores para Fc de IgG, peptidoglicano e proteína M. Dentre esses fatores, a proteína M tem especial importância por ser de membrana com propriedades antifagocitárias e de aderência. A doença tem baixa letalidade e alta morbidade e seus prejuízos econômicos devem-se à perda de performance e custo do tratamento. O diagnóstico clínico e o tratamento não apresentam dificuldades, mas a profilaxia é prejudicada pela baixa eficiência das vacinas disponíveis, com índices de proteção de 50 por cento. O garrotilho pode ocorrer em todas as épocas do ano, mas o frio e a umidade facilitam a sobrevivência do agente e sua disseminação, portanto animais que vivem nos estados mais frios e úmidos do país são mais vulneráveis à infecção. Novas vacinas utilizando antígenos purificados ou de subunidades estão sendo desenvolvidas com a finalidade de incrementar sua potência e evitar efeitos indesejáveis. A comprovação de diferenças de antigenicidade, entre estirpes, alerta sobre a importância da seleção apropriada das cepas vacinais.


Strangles is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract of horses produced by Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, a Lancefield's group C β haemolytic bacterium. It produces a mucopurulent secretion of the anterior airways, as well as lymphadenitis and abscesses. The bacteria synthesizes several pathogenicity factors such a hyaluronic acid capsule, hyaluronidase, streptolisin O, streptokinase, IgG Fc receptors, peptidoglican and protein M. Among these factors, protein M deserves special importance due to its antifagocitic and adherence properties. The disease has high morbidity and low lethality, and produces economic losses due to low performance and treatment. Clinical diagnosis and treatment are done easily, but prophylaxis is hampered by the low potency of vaccines, that protect around 50 percent of vaccinated animals. Strangles may occur during all the year, but cold and humid weather favors the survival of streptococci, making animals that live in regions with those characteristics more prone to infection. New vaccines using purified or subunit antigens have been developed aiming to increase their potency and to avoid undesirable side effects. The demonstration that bacteria strains show differences in their antigenicity, called attention on the selection of appropriate strains to use as antigens.

Foram avaliados fatores de risco associados à ocorrência de doenças respiratórias em 349 potros Puro Sangue Inglês (PSI) monitorados do nascimento ao sexto mês de vida na região de Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. A partir da avaliação clínica e laboratorial pôde-se registrar a frequência de 9,5 por cento (33) casos respiratórios, com mortalidade de 0,57 por cento (2). A ocorrência de casos foi mais elevada nos meses de verão, e potros com idade entre quatro e seis meses foram mais suscetíveis (P<0,001). O desenvolvimento de doenças foi influenciado (P<0,001) pelo sistema de criação e pelas práticas de manejo, os quais aumentaram o potencial de contaminação do ambiente. Na avaliação microbiológica, a maior frequência de isolados foi de Streptococcus equi (57 por cento), seguido do Rhodococcus equi (17 por cento), letal em 50 por cento dos casos. Nenhum caso clínico foi associado ao vírus da influenza equina (EIV) e ao herpesvírus equino (EHV-1-4). Os resultados sugerem que fatores ligados ao manejo, na criação de equinos PSI, parecem contribuir decisivamente para a manifestação da doença respiratória e alertam para a morbidade causada pela adenite equina e a letalidade atribuída à rodococose.


Risk factors associated the occurrence of respiratory diseases they were evaluated between 349 Thoroughbred foals, monitored of the birth to the sixth month of life in the region of Bagé-RS-Brazil. From the laboratory and clinical evaluation, the frequency of 9.5 percent (33) of respiratory cases with mortality of 0.57 percent (2) was recorded. The occurrence of cases was higher in months of summer and foals with age between four and six months were more susceptible (P<0.001). The development of the diseases was influenced (P<0.001) by the breeding system of and management practices that increased the environmental contamination potential. In the evaluation microbiological, , the highest frequency of isolated was of Streptococcus equi (57 percent), followed by the Rhodococcus equi (17 percent), lethal in 50 percent of the cases. No clinic case was associated to the equine influenza virus (EIV) and to the equine herpesvirus (EHV-1-4). The results suggest that connected factors to the management in the breeding of thoroughbred equine are going to contribute decisively for the manifestation of the respiratory disease and alert for the morbidity caused by the equine adenitis and the lethality related to rodococosis.

Horse Strangles appears frequently in animals vaccinated with commercial bacterins in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Aiming to know the antigenic relationships of strains recovered from sick animals among them and with two vaccines profusely used in the state, bilateral cross reactivity indices (CRI) were estimated. In addition, the immunogenicity of vaccines prepared with field isolates and commercial vaccines was tested in mice. Antibody titers were measured by ELISA and expressed as seroconversions. Thirteen strains of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, nine classified biochemically as typical and other four as atypical strains, were recovered from 35 sick horses belonging to 10 herds of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The strains recovered from sick horses showed very close CRI, suggesting antigenic homogeneity among them, but not with the vaccinal strains. A vaccine produced with an atypical strain induced the highest seroconversion, 9.4, while two produced with typical strains were poorly-immunogenic. The commercial vaccines were less immunogenic than five and four vaccines produced with field strains, inducing seroconversions of 2.6 and 3.8, respectively.


A Adenite Eqüina é freqüente em animais vacinados com bacterinas comerciais no Rio Grande do Sul. Com o objetivo de determinar as relações antigênicas entre cepas isoladas de casos clínicos e duas vacinas amplamente utilizadas no Estado, foram determinados os índices de reatividade cruzada bilateral (IRC) entre elas. Também foi determinada a imunogenicidade em camundongos de vacinas preparadas com cepas de campo e de vacinas comerciais. Os títulos de anticorpos foram determinados por ELISA e expressos como soroconversão. Foram isoladas 13 cepas de Streptococcus equi subsp. equi de 35 casos clínicos de Adenite Eqüina em 10 diferentes rebanhos do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, das quais nove foram classificadas bioquimicamente como típicas e outras quatro como atípicas. As cepas de campo apresentaram elevada reatividade cruzada, sugerindo homogeneidade antigênica entre elas, mas não com as cepas vacinais. Uma vacina produzida com cepa atípica induziu soroconversão de 9.4, enquanto duas vacinas produzidas com cepas típicas foram pouco imunogênicas. As vacinas comerciais induziram soroconversões de 2.6 e 3.8, menores que quatro e cinco vacinas produzidas com cepas de campo, respectivamente.

Foi realizado um levantamento sobre theileriose equina em uma propriedade da região sul do estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Amostras de sangue foram coletadas de 108 éguas de um haras localizado no municipio de Bagé, latitude 31°30' Sul e longitude 54Ú10' Oeste. A sorologia foi realizada com o uso da imunofluorescência indireta (IFAT) e utilizou-se a técnica de Nested Reacão em Cadeia Polimerase (nPCR). Do total de amostras examinadas, 22 por cento (24) foram positivas por IFAT e 15 por cento (16) por nPCR). Na análise por raca, 15.05 por cento (14) dos animais Puro Sangue Inglês (PSI) foram soro-positivos, e dos animais da raça Crioula (RC), 55 por cento (11) foram positivos por IFAT.


A study on equine theileriosis was carried out in the southern region of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Blood samples were collected from 113 mares from an equine breeding farm located in the city ofBagé, latitude 31 "30'S and a longitude of 54 U10' W. The serological testing was carried out with the use of indirect fluorescence test (IFAT) and compared with Nested Polimerase Chain Reaction (nPCR). Among the sera collected from 118 horses, 25 were found positive to Theileria equi by the IFAT, while by nPCR 17 positive for T. equi was observed, corresponding to a frequency of22.1 percent> and 15.0 percent, respectively. The racial analysis showed 15.05 percent (14) thoroughbred and 55 percent (11) Crioulo breed horses to be positive by IFAT.
